But God…

Scripture

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
Ephesians 2:4

Observation

A. W. Pink called this the most important phrase in the Bible.  He said it was like a great erasure.  With it, the thoughts, the implications, the actions that came before it are effectively erased.  They are made null and void.  They no longer matter.  Just like this passage in Ephesians.

Verse one says “you were dead in your trespasses and sins.”  That is a terrible way to be in.  Then that is expounded on by giving more details culminating in my spiritual lineage passed down from the father of lies through Adam, I “[was] by nature a child of wrath.”  Now, it’s time for the erasure.  “BUT GOD…”

“…being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when were were dead in our transgressions…”  Because of who God is, is all the reason He needs to do anything.  He decided that I, just like the dead who are content to remain that way, am content to remain dead in my sins, needed His love, His mercy, His intervention.

He “made us alive together with Christ.”  He erased my past and gave me new life.  With Christ.  By grace.  “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Application

What now?  Live.  Stop standing around doing nothing.  Serve.  Be with other Christians.  The past is gone.  The present is where I live.  The future is what I live for.  MOVE!!

Prayer

Father, thank You for life.  Help me to live it to bring You glory.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Like Job

Scripture

Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before Him.  This also will be my salvation, For a godless man may not come before His presence. Job 13:15-16

Observation

I used to hate reading the book of Job.  He came across as a whiner to me.  But then I went through some trying times and now I can’t get enough of Job.  Job is minding his own business when God suggests to Satan that Job couldn’t be coerced into cursing God.  So, Satan takes Job’s wealth, family, and health away.  That leaves three well intentioned friends.  All they do is talk down to Job with an air of superiority.

Job is persistent.  He complains about God, wonders why God would allow this to happen, and even wishes he were dead.  But Job never curses God.  Instead, he puts his hope in God!  He even talks with God!  He has horrible circumstances yet he still seeks God’s presence through prayer.  He knows his own salvation depends on it.  In fact, he KNOWS he is able to come into God’s presence while mere godless men may not.

Application

Job is not a quitter.  He keeps pushing through.  I like that about him.  He is a praying man.  He knows that God is the only One with answers for him.  And He is the only One with answers for me.  I need to pray more and seek His presence.

Prayer

Lord, for what ever reason You have allowed me to experience the trials I am facing, I bow before You and worship You.  By the blood of Your Son I have been redeemed.  I don’t need to know why I have these trials but I want to bring glory to Your Name.  Give me strength.

In Jesus’ Name I pray.  Amen

This Mystery

Scripture

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:29-32 (NASB)

Observation

Marriage between one man and one woman is a reminder of the relationship that exists between Jesus Christ and His bride the Church.  Any other type of arrangement destroys what God has created.

If two men were to “marry” then there would be two Christ figures.  They would both claim the headship of Christ thereby denigrating Jesus Christ and His ministry.  They become pictures of anti-Christs thereby denying both Jesus Christ and God the Father.

If two women were to “marry” then there would be two Churches.  They would be picturing two false religious systems.  These systems would not exist for the saints to worship God but rather to enslave and destroy them instead.

And if a man and his wife divorce…?

They were one flesh when married.  Divorce tears painful gashes in the picture of Jesus Christ and His bride.  God is not glorified.  The world only laughs.  This not God’s will. Marriage exists as a perfect example of the fellowship that exists between the Son and the Church.  It is an intimate relationship.  To seek divorce is blasphemous.

Application

There is only one Christ that gave His life that I might have eternal life.  I worship as a part of His Church.  The two joined together is a glorious thing that witnesses to the world.  Never seek divorce from that which is meant to show that relationship.  Let God be glorified.

Prayer

Lord, help me to part of that which You created to show the world Your Son and Your Church in relationship.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
